Febuary was kind of like normal summer where you do allot of relaxing and sitting around with and without friends. I went to a coulple parties and to the beach a few times. It was a good time for me to realize how terrible the coffee was because i had just had real coffee in santiago. Ive bought some creameer that makes t taste a bit better but you know... Anyway not allot happened I really only wrote this entry because I promised me and my mm that I´d write every month.
My return home date was set for June 16th.
A Whole New World
I have made this blog to share my expieriences as an exchange student in Chile with my family, friends, and of course all of the other people that want to read about it. :P

January Vacation!
Pisco Elqui
My district planned what I would call a mini fun weekend. We all got together in a city called La Serena. I had to ride in a bus for 22 hours to get there it was at the time the most uncomfortable ride ive been on. then from La Serena we went to a little town called Pisco Elqui and camped. I didn´t enjoy this so much but ive never been much of a camper. the scenery was beautiful though! we had planned for two nights there and were gonna do a bike ride and horse back riding but that all fell through because nobody wanted to stay a second night. I also wanted to state a funny fact the Germans all brought suitcases to go camping xD lol
La Serena
After I got back to La Serena I stayed with my host brothers friends parents so that i could get to know the city better. I had a great time exploring the city! I would go out around 1 everyday and not get home until 9 every night! the center was like 4 times the size of the one here in Arica! the beach was like a million times better than the one here in Arica and there was this garden called the Japanese Garden and it was Amazing!! I stayed in this city for 3 days before going to Santiago.
Santiago
In Santiago I stayed with my host parents for the first week. I got together with my friend almost every day while i was there. We went to a theme park and i got the courage to ride 2 real roller coasters for the first time WITHOUT getting sick!! We went to this hill that was really big and had a castle on the top of it. and an amazing view! There was a library that was huge but i wandered around that place for like 30 minutes and never found any books besides a room full of biographies. then i went alone to this other hill with another castle but i never found it... there was a Japanese Garden there but it was pretty lame compared to the one i had seen in La Serena. Eventually my friend invited me to her vacation house and so i went there for the weekend. (ps there is some amazing graffiti in the city)
My friends Vacation house
Her vacation home is about an hour away from stgo, and was probably one of the most amazing houses ive seen here in Chile! The town that it was located outside of was pretty lame but the house had everything! It had horses and an area to ride the horses, there was a pool, a huge garden where tons of things grew, and it was huge! not allot happened there but it was a bunch of fun!!
Back to Santiago
When I got back to Santiago I continued to hang out with Victoria (mi friend) everyday and eat allot of "gringo" food (usa food) like dominos, Papa jonhs, etc... I did some more touring but nothing significant although a few posts back i mentioned that I went to Pisagua and In santiago I went to a museum that explained the history of it a lot better and you can look the story up online but it´s like a mini holocaust that happened in the 70s! then the time to go home came and i bought a ticket in a less uncomfortable seat so i could have more spending money. i got home at 1am on the 29th.

December!
Las Peñas
So my host brother and mom thought it would be a good idea for me to go on this emm event (cant think of a good word) but they told me it was a 3 hour walk and so me and my host brother went at midnight to the bus station and rode for about 2 hours. At 2 we arrived and began the walk into the dessert. yes the desert in the middle of the night xP It´s ok though it was a special religious holiday so 100s of people were going. we joined in a group of others our age and walked. we arrived at 8am which right there should tell you it was way more than 3 hours. After looking around the pueblito surrounding the church we ate some breakfast and at around 10 we headed back. It took us four hours to get to the bus and then another 2 hours and we arrived home!! I drank a cup of coffee while Oscar showered and then I hopped in the shower myself and then went to bed at 6 and woke up at 11 the next morning!! haha
Pisagua
Some family friends came to visit and somehow the topic of pisagua came up. They had never been there and neither had I. So we decided it would be a good day trip for us to take. We left at 8am and drove out to the town. Its only about 4 blocks long. We got to tour this old theater. Then we went to this huge graveyard and just walked through it. there was this big stone that explained the history of pisagua which i´ll now summarize. -When someone didn´t agree with the government they were taken out to this area because nobody lived near there and they could do what they wanted with nobody coming to help. they would kill the person and throw it into the graveyard. This all stopped about 50 or 60 years ago. Now the graveyard is allot more organized and they have the names of allot of the people on the plaque.- After the graveyard we went back to the town and ate a lunch. It was kind of a dirty restaurant but that's what you get when you eat in a town of 100.
Navidad
Christmas time here is without snow, cold, eggnog, and spirit! I was the only one who made any Christmas cookies. the only decoration in the house was the tree. and I had to make eggnog homemade! (which I did an amazing job at) But anyway, Christmas here wasn't celebrated so different. the only real difference was that we had Christmas dinner at 10pm on Christmas eve, and we opened presents at midnight as soon as it was Christmas. And everyone just opened there presents instead of going one by one and taking turns which surprised me a bit. It was probably the worst day of the year for me because I really just wanted to be with my family, but i did get to go to the beach! haha
Año Nuevo
The News was almost a repeat of Christmas with the 10pm supper but at midnight everyone drank a glass of champaign and ate 12 grapes while watching the fireworks. then at around 2 I went to an all night party which was really awesome! And rotary i´ll have you know I didn´t break the no drinking rule, which made it like 10 times better because i could make fun of my friends :P But I got home at 7:30am that morning.
Ying
I don't know how well you guys keep up on this blog but in an earlier post i mentioned a student from Thailand. well her year is over on the 10th of January. We had a surprise going away party for her. Her Spanish dd get allot better but she needs like 3 more months for it to be good.

Noviembre!
Halloween
Halloween is a coppied holliday from the USA! xD who would of thought we had something of our own that we share with other countries. Anyway their are a few differences such as here you get the day off of school and then the day after halloween off also. I was really surprised that there wasnt school either of these days. anyway on halloween I went to a halloween party for a little while but ended up leaving because I had just gotten back from my vacation that day and really wanted to relax and maybe watch some scary movies.
Dia de los postres
The first saturday of November my school had a celebration at the school to get families out there to enjoy some desert like foods. Different classes did performances as well as some students doing smaller group performances. I was actually suposed to work a stand for about an hour but never got around to it. D:
2º Basico (2nd grade)
I realized my spanish has improved imensly, but i still am not fluent. I asked to cut out 2º basico from my schedule so that i could i spend more time with my class and practice more. I felt kind of bad leaving them because they were all sad to hear i was done with them, but I wasn´t getting anywhere sitting around writing all class. But one of the last classes i went and saw some really great art and was surprised whe i found out it was almost all done by a freind of mine from school.
Teletón
Not exatly sure what this and i cant go either because i was at a rotary conference in viña del mar when it happened, but my school had two fundraisers for it. Both times it was like a big sale where everyone in the school brought things like movies, books, toys, clothes, ect... to sell and all prophets went twaoard the teletón. It was fun because everyone bought silly things that they dont need or really want just to be dorks. xDD
Thanksgiving
I met a girl from the USA who lives here with her whole family, Now since Thanksgivin g is an American Holiday I didnt think i was gonna get to celebrate it this year, but she invited me as well as a guy from the Dominican Republic. The food was great and there was tons of it just like Thanksgivig should be :D I almost felt like I was in the USA for a while which was strange , And when I got home my host mom asked me in spanish a question and I answered in english xDD but I also fond out that she was a Rotary Exchange Student to Brazil just a couple years ago! It was really neat to get to see all her pins and i cant wait to shaare all mine with her!
My Host Brothers Bad Luck
My host brother, who went to germany, Had a really great family at first, but then they started to get really strict and when he tried to change Rotary didnt do anything to help him. eventually, im not sure how or why , but he got sent home. The oddest thing is that he went to a German speaking country and came back almost fluent in English... How does that even happen xP but hey he can practice with me now, If he came back knowing German he wouldnt be able to do that. xP
Viña Del Mar
The first weekend in desember we had a ditrict conference in viña del mar! I arrived there on thursday and stayed with a Rotarian everyone else got stuck with 5 to 12 hour bus rides! Friday we didn´t do anything but talk all day and we gave speaches. Saturday we spent an amazing day in a rotarians house and had tons of great food swam in the pool and just had a good time. Sunday we did some more topics and they had us do an open topic presentacion which we had to come up with in 30 minutes so my group did hide and seek xD and the others was a trick to get rotary to take us out for ice cream haha xDDD Sunday at 3 we were given free time until it was time for us to go...unfortunately I had to leave at 250 to go catch my plane >< Hopefully I´ll be travelling out there to stay with the other Students for a few weeks in january.
Spanish
Not much to say here but after seeing how far everyone has come with spanish I just have to say IM SO HAPPY with how well mine is! Im not the best but I´m definitely decent :D

Vacation to the south!! :D
Day One (10/21/11)
The first day of my vacation I woke up and got ready for the plane ride, I was already packed because I hade taken care of that the night before. The plane ride was boring as expected. When I got to Santiago my host parents were already there waiting. From the airport we took a bus for about 20 minutes, then we got off the bus and walked a short distance half of which I was begged to buy something by some guy that realized I wasn´t from Chile. Then we got on to a subway and rode for about 40 minutes, when we finally got off we got onto another bus! D: We only rode for about 30 minutes this time, but I had too stand the whole time -_- Finally we got to my host parents daughters house! There we ate some food, I took a nap, and then it was time too leave. Thankfully we had a ride this time! When we got to my host parents appartment my host mom packed her bags and then we left again, tis time to meet a friend who we were going to stay with. Her apartment was on the 11 floor and had a really good view. They pointed out that Santiago is divided into section just like New York with Mannhatten and Brooklynn and whatever else is there, but I don´t remember the name of the section where we stayed. That night I slept on an Air matress and it kind of sucked.
Day Two (10/22/11)
I woke up early because the air mattress was on a hard wood floor and it had deflated and hurting my back! I made some instant coffee (Oh man I miss real coffee from the coffee pot!) Got something to eat for breakfast and sat on the balcony and read. When my host mom and her friend got up we all got ready and went to a mall. I went off on my own and found a STARBUCKS!!! I was so excited that I ended up going back there like three time in the 2 hours that we were there. xP I also bought some books in spanish that I enjoy but have to use a dictionary allot for. :/ We went to the food court for Lunch then back to the apartment to get ready for the next flight.
On the plane we saw a a volcanoes with a lot of smoke coming out of it which was kind of neat (this will come back up later so dont forget it)
Then we arrived in Puerto Montt and checked into a really nice hotel with a nice but boring view of a hill. We left our stuff and went to a Casino where I won and lost nothing. When we got back to the hotel I went to bed. There were three bed in the hotel two twin size beds and a queen size bed. For whatever reason they game me the big bed and they took the small ones, but i didn´t complain. :P
Day Three (10/23/11)
We spent most of this day on a bus on our way to Chiloé. It was terrible! But Chiloé is an Island so the bus had to cross parts of the ocean and we got to get off the bus and look over the edge which was really cool! We finally got off the Bus and into the car of the people we were staying with. We got a a small tour of some of Chiloé on the way to the house. It is a really beautiful Island! Then we got to their house and ate something and just kind of relaxed the rest of the night. this was the first time I had a clam and it wasn´t too great.
Day Four (10/24/11)
I began the day with a run and enjoyed the cool breeze and the great view! When I got back I had breakfast and got ready for the day. We took a walk aroud the city, by the way we stayed in a city called Achao and it only has about 2000 people living there. The centro (if you dont remember centro is like a downtown area) was really tiny but had a bunch of hand made things.
Later we did another drive and saw a church that was really old and we also saw some more really graet views (Chiloé is famous for 16 Churches that are on the island...just FYI) After driving around we went to a cookout and i ate some kind of crab which was good.
Day Five (10/25/11)
We got to see the inside of another church and then I went for a run around the city, the view wasn´t as great but it was still awesome. Not much happened during the day, but that night we went to a friends house and had some normal drinks and some tht are only in Chiloé called liquor de oro, It wasn´t that good.
Day Six (10/26/11)
We got up early to catch a bus...Yay! We went to another city about 1 hour away and there was alot of cool things and almost everything was handmade! We then went to some other friends house and had lunch before leaving to catch another wonderful bus. :/ This is where the volcano comes back, we didn´t watch any news until this point and we found out that the volcano had closed the Airport for a few days and if it didn´t open back up we would have to take a 12 hour Bus ride back to Santiago! D: at about 10pm we were back in Puerto Monnt. They went to the casino and I watched TV after changing the language to English! It was nice to watch some of the shows I like that are only in Spanish here in English again!!
Day Seven (10/27/11)
We went to a mall and it was the worst mall ever! There was no coffee shop, and no decent bookstore and the other stores were just clothes! There was nothing to do! Finally we met in the food court for lunch, then we went to an area that had alot of really great handmade stuff! I would put pictures of what I bought up, but mostly everything is Christmas presents for my family and since they read this that would spoil the surprise. After Chrismas I´ll post a picture.
Day Eight (10/28/11)
We went to a city called Frutillar and it is a really small city, but is the cleanest city I´ve ever seen in my life! We ate lunch there and then we went to Puerto Varas (i think) and went to the Oktoberfest celebration (i know thats Germany but whatever it was there :P) Then we went to the casino again and this time i came out with the same amount of money that i went in with. We got back to the Hotel and found out that the planes running again! Thank God!
Day Nine (10/29/11)
This was almost a repeat of the 7th day. We went to the same Mall, an dthe same area with all the hand made things. Then we hung around the city until it was time to go to the airport. We got on the plane and arrived in santiago around 10 and at the house around 11. Again I slept on the air matress.
Day Ten (10/30/11)
This was almost a repeat of day 2. Got up early, coffee, breakfast, reading, got ready, went to the mall, STARBUCKS! food court, back to the apartment. Then we decided to go to this other Mall and it was HUGE!!! I´ve never seen such a big mall I spent like an hour just to walk around and see what was there without entering any stores, then I went to starbucks and started looking at stuff! We ate at this little resaraunt that was there and then returned to the apartment. The next morning I got up at 6:30 to catch the plane to Arica.
